The body of an Australian man has been recovered from a ravine near Fox Glacier.

The experienced 66-year-old hunter had arrived in New Zealand on the weekend and went hunting with his son at the Fox Glacier on Wednesday.

They became separated about 1800 metres up in the Westland Ranges, before the son found his father at the bottom of a ravine with head injuries.

"The son set off the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon at about 1pm, which called out a rescue helicopter immediately," police said.

However, the helicopter was unable to land and another had to be called out.

The man died shortly after and the son was winched to safety.

A formal identification will take place and until this has been completed, police will not release his name.

Other family members were flying out from Australia on Thursday to join the man's son.
