There is strong bidding for a 20m motorised schooner originally built for the Australian Navy in 1944 which is being sold in an auction with a $1 reserve on TradeMe.

The seller says she bought the yacht for her seafaring husband but when they divorced she got the yacht.

"I love her but she is not my passion and not my area of expertise. It makes my heart sad seeing her potential go under-utilised.

"So help me out. Buy my lovely old girl and see the world differently," the seller says.

The $1 reserve is long gone as 136 bids have been made and the top bid so far is $475,000. The auction closes on January 16 at 1.25pm.

The seller says the vessel was originally a survey ship but during the past 15 years Ruah has undergone a quality conversion to become a private yacht.

A new main engine was installed 2013. At the same time, all electrical systems were upgraded.

It is described as a staysail motor schooner with a full cutter keel. It is of classic timber construction made with double diagonal Jarrah with copper sheathing underneath.

She has six private cabins in total.

The vessel has an insured value of $800,000.

It can be viewed in Chaffers Marina, Wellington.
