VIENNA — Austrian law enforcement officials say they have found 90 elephant tusks worth nearly 600,000 euros (more than $600,000) in two Vienna apartments belonging to the same suspect.

Authorities describe the find as the largest of its kind in Austria and one of the largest within the 28-nation European Union. They say the tusks weigh more than half a ton.

State broadcaster ORF said Wednesday that the largest tusk is over 2 meters (yards) long.

Trading in ivory is forbidden by international law in an effort to protect elephants from extinction.

The suspect is not being identified in keeping with Austrian privacy laws.
