New Zealand high school students were left scratching their heads on Thursday after authorities botched a mathematics exam question.

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority deputy chief executive Kristine Kilkelly, on Friday, apologised for the mistake in a Level 3 Statistics exam question.

"In the examination there was an error in a data table in of one of the three questions that meant students couldn't answer part of that question," she said.

Authorities are investigating how the error made it into the exam questions, but Ms Kilkelly said it would not disadvantage students.

She said the panel marking the exam papers knew of the mistake and would take it into account when grading students.
