Authorities to probe cruise ship collision

Authorities are investigating how a cruiseliner broke free from its moorings at PrimePort Timaru on Sunday and bashed into another parked vessel.

Two investigators from the Transport Accident Investigation Commission will on Monday visit the scene of the incident involving the Seabourn Encore liner.

The commission said it is to determine the incident's cause so it can make recommendations to avoid similar incidents in the future.

But it is not a body set up to press charges or bring punishment, it said in a statement.

Launched in January, the 604-person luxury liner broke its moorings at 3pm on Sunday, a spokesman for Prime Port said.

There were high winds at the time.
