New Zealand have finished the junior world rugby championships in Manchester on a high note, thumping Wales 71-12 in the play-off for fifth.

Looking to salvage a little pride after missing out on the semi-finals, the Kiwis ran in 11 tries to two, with Caleb Makene scoring a hat-trick and Shaun Stevenson a brace.

The New Zealanders had earlier pipped Wales 18-17 in pool play, but ran riot right from the first whistle in scoring five first-half tries to rack up a 35-5 lead at the break.

The defending champions, New Zealand suffered their worst result at the under-20 tournament after being eliminated at the group stage, paying the price for an early 33-24 loss to Ireland.
