Baby City fined $39k over cot safety

A baby product retailer has been fined $39,000 for selling non-compliant cots.

Baby City was fined in the Auckland District Court for selling cots which failed to comply with safety standards.

The cot leaflets were missing safety information, including the distance needed from power points, and a warning on the necessary mattress size.

The Commerce Commission says there were also non-compliant base markings for the mattress and the mattress tags did not include the manufacturer's name and a contact.

The non-compliant products were two cot models sold between October 2014 and October 2015, but Baby City had not heard of any injuries or incidents.

In January last year, it issued a product safety notice with an instruction booklet to repair defects and a new information leaflet for the cots.

The cots affected were:

*Milano 3-in-1 Sleigh style cot

*Milano Phoenix cot
