National Party backbencher Paul Foster-Bell says he'll vote for Bill English as the next prime minister because he's getting the message that people want stability.

Mr English is gathering support in his bid but so far nearly all of it has come from cabinet colleagues.

Mr Foster-Bell says he taken soundings from National Party supporters in the Wellington Central electorate where he is based, and from the business community.

"I have been sent a clear signal that the maintenance of economic stability for New Zealand is of paramount importance," he said.

"Our country needs sound leadership in these turbulent times."
