Backstroker Main betters Rio mark

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 6/04/2016

Auckland backstroker Corey Main has ducked under the Rio Olympics qualifying standard over 100m at the Canadian Olympic trials in Toronto.

The event is the second official trial for New Zealand swimmers to meet the Rio qualifying times.

Main, who attends the University of Florida, clocked 54.27sec to be third fastest in the heats, comfortably under the Olympic A standard of 54.36.

Main, who will swim the B final in the evening programme, is the only New Zealand swimmer to go under a qualifying time so far at the eight-day meeting.

There are 13 New Zealand swimmers competing in Toronto, looking to join the six swimmers who qualified in eight events at last week's New Zealand championships.
