Bad weather keeps schools closed

The severe wet weather has kept dozens of schools and early childhood centres across the North Island empty on Friday.

Twenty-nine schools and 38 early childhood centres are shut from Auckland down to Manawatu and Hawke's Bay, affecting 3101 students and 1252 pre-schools, according to the Ministry of Education.

A state of emergency is still in place in Whakatane and Ministry staff are working closely with the principals of Edgecumbe School and Edgecumbe College, says MOE deputy secretary of sector enablement and support Katrina Casey.

"We understand this is a tough time for students, parents and teachers [and] national team is on standby to assist as needed."

Ms Casey said the Edgecumbe schools are like to be assessed on Monday at the earliest, but early signs are that they weren't damaged as they are on higher ground.
