The world No.36 Cypriot was simply too good for his French opponent, unleashing the full range of flicks and tricks that made him a crowd favourite around the world.

He'll go on to face wildcard and fellow entertainer Dustin Brown on Wednesday afternoon in the second round.

"I had a lot of fun and I played well, so I'm happy," Baghdatis said.

"I think I was solid throughout the baseline but I could improve my serve a bit."

After an extended rain break in the second game, both players re-emerged primed for action, breaking each other and leaving the first set poised at 3-3.

Baghdatis eventually claimed first blood, breaking his French opponent at 5-4 following a multiple-deuce game.

Both players slugged it out in the second, holding serve until 5-4 when Baghdatis again broke Mannarino with a stunning backhand.

The 31-year-old hit seven aces but nailed less than half of his first serves.
