Bangladesh make good start in windy NZ

Mominul Haque built on Tamim Iqbal's quick half-century with a well-crafted 64 not out as Bangladesh made a decent start to their Test series against New Zealand on a rain-interrupted opening day in Wellington.

Playing their first Test series outside their homeland since September 2014 - and their first since a famous win over England last October - the Tigers were 3-154 at stumps after losing the toss at the Basin Reserve.

Only 40.2 overs were bowled as a result of a couple of lengthy rain delays and while the pitch prepared was a green seamer, windy conditions seemed to trouble the Kiwi bowlers, who struggled to contain Tamim after Tim Southee had removed Imrul Kayes early on.

Tamim grew in confidence after some loose strokes, with the left-hander speeding along to a half-century from 48 balls, the third successive Test where he had passed 50 in the first innings.

He had contributed 56 of his team's 60 runs before falling lbw to Trent Boult, a decision overturned on review.

Mominul was more circumspect but cast off the shackles with three fours in an over off Boult before, in increasingly gusty conditions, top-edging a hook off Southee for six.

Rain wiped out much of the afternoon session but Mominul brought up his 50 on the resumption by putting Neil Wagner away through point for his ninth four.

Wagner, by far the most economical New Zealand bowler, ended the 85-run stand between Mominul and Mahmudullah, who slashed away from his body and was caught behind for 26.

But Mominul was still there by the time bad light brought an early end to proceedings to leave Bangladesh, who suffered 3-0 whitewash defeats in both the one-day and Twenty20 international series, well placed in the first of two Tests.

Boult finished with figures of 1-53, Southee 1-45, Colin de Grandhomme 0-26 and Wagner 1-28.
