It's time for northern Kiwis to fire up the Boxing Day barbie and get the snags grilling, according to the national weather bureau.

The MetService's Boxing Day Barbecue Index predicts temperatures above 23C - which it designates the perfect barbie weather - to break out across much of the northwest of the North Island by 1pm.

Whangarei will lead the way with an expected balmy top of 24C, while Hamilon will climb to 23C.

While not quite as hot in other areas of the North Island, Auckland at 21C and Wellington at 19C can still expect sunny weather, the bureau predicts.

In the South Island, Blenheim is expected to hit a high of 23C, while Christchurch will reach 20C and Dunedin 19C.

Kawarau in the South Island's Queenstown region recorded the top temperature on Christmas Day with a high of 27C.

On Tuesday, temperatures are expected to heat up even more with the MetService predicting Christchurch will reach 28C and Napier in the North Island 30C.
