Kristine Bartlett, the care worker who filed the claim that led to a $2 billion pay settlement, says it's a life-changer and she's thrilled.

Ms Bartlett began her case for pay equity in 2012 and the government announced the agreement on Tuesday that will deliver significant pay rises over the next five years.

"What an exciting moment, after five years I'm thrilled," she said at a gathering of union representatives and fellow care workers near parliament.

"This will be a life-changer, we will be walking around with bigger smiles than we did last week."

John Ryall, spokesman for the E Tu union which was the lead negotiator, said it was "the pay settlement of a lifetime... it will end poverty wages for this mainly female workforce''.
