Bauer left out of Tour de France by team

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 27/06/2016

New Zealand cyclist Jack Bauer won't get a chance to build on his dramatic association with the Tour de France after failing to win selection for a fourth successive appearance.

Bauer wasn't included in the Cannondale Pro Cycling Team's line-up announced on Monday, leaving the Kiwi contingent at a record three for the Tour starting on Saturday.

Greg Henderson (Lotto Soudal) will make his fifth and final Tour appearance before retirement while George Bennett (Lotto-Jumbo) and Shane Archbold (Bora Argon) are making their debuts.

Two of Bauer's three Tours have been ruined by spectacular crashes.

He suffered gruesome facial injuries when crashing at speed into a fence on debut in 2013. Last year he broke his hip, sidelining him from cycling for eight months.

Bauer completed the Tour in 2014, coming painfully close to recording New Zealand's first individual stage win. He was overhauled inside the last 50m after a long solo breakaway ride.
