New Zealand's Jack Bauer has won the fifth stage of the Tour of Britain after just holding off the chasing peloton at the finish in Bath.

Bauer was part of a breakaway that led for the vast majority of the 194.5km stage starting in Aberdare in South Wales.

And the Cannondale rider won a sprint ahead of France's Amael Moinard and Erick Rowsell of Great Britain, with Caleb Ewan leading the main bunch across the line in fourth and given the same time.

Belgian Julien Vermote maintained his six-second lead ahead of Britain's Stephen Cummings in the overall classification, with another home rider, Ben Swift, in third.

Bauer, Moinard, Rowsell and Johnny McEvoy made their move after 25km and were subsequently joined by Spain's Javier Moreno.

The quintet built up a lead of more than five minutes at one stage but the peloton kept them in range.

McEvoy dropped away after crossing the line first at the top of all three climbs.

Moinard pushed the pace in an effort to ensure the break stayed away and ultimately was successful, although he could not get the better of Bauer.

Friday looks set to be a decisive stage in determining the winner of the race as the riders head from Sidmouth to a summit finish at Haytor on Dartmoor.
