Beale called into Kiwis starting lineup

NZN 2/05/2016

Cronulla utility back Gerard Beale has been summoned into the Kiwis starting line-up for the Test against Australia in Newcastle after the visitors were struck by twin injuries.

Beale will line up in the centres on Friday for his eighth Test and his first since 2014.

He was called into the camp on Monday when Brisbane second rower Alex Glenn withdrew after injuring a calf muscle.

Manly's Peta Hiku was then ruled out with a knee complaint, resulting in Brisbane utility shifting from centre to fullback, creating a space for 25-year-old Beale.

The Kiwis also have concerns over the fitness of fellow-centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall, who sported a moon boot at the team's recovery training session on Monday.

The Sydney Rooster will be given time to prove his readiness, with Parramatta's Brad Takairangi and Melbourne forward Kenny Bromwich arriving to cover further casualties in the Test build-up.

Coach Stephen Kearney has named uncapped pair Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Manu Ma'u in his starting lineup.

Utility Lewis Brown is the starting hooker in place of the dropped Issac Luke while Tohu Harris is five-eighth in the absence of Kieran Foran.

Kiwis: Jordan Kahu, Jason Nightingale, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Gerard Beale, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Tohu Harris, Shaun Johnson, Jesse Bromwich (capt), Lewis Brown, Adam Blair, Kevin Proctor, Manu Ma'u, Jason Taumalolo. Interchange (from): Kodi Nikorima, Greg Eastwood, Martin Taupau, Sam Moa, Brad Takairangi, Kenny Bromwich.
