NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/05/2016

Kiwi cyclist George Bennett has dropped from third to ninth in the Tour of California's overall standings after the sixth-stage time trial around the streets of Folsom.

Bennett finished 38th in the 20.3km time trial, 1min 53sec down on Australian winner Rohan Dennis (BMC), who clocked a blistering 24min 16sec.

Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-Quick Step) maintained his grasp on the yellow jersey, despite finishing 45sec down on Dennis.

The Frenchman holds a 16sec lead over Dennis in the general classification, with Bennett slipping back to ninth, 1min 45sec behind Alaphilippe.

The only other New Zealander in the field, Patrick Bevin (Cannondale), finished 15th in the time trial, 1min 11sec down on Dennis.

The 140-strong field now tackles the 175km seventh stage, an undulating Sonoma County wine loop which starts and finishes in Santa Rosa.

The eight-day tour concludes the next day in Sacramento with a flat 136km closing stage.
