Bennett fourth in Tour of Spain stage

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 3/09/2016

George Bennett has enjoyed one of his most prominent rides as a road cycling professional, finishing fourth on the gruelling 14th stage of the Tour of Spain.

New Zealander Bennett featured in several breaks on the mountainous 196km stage from Urdatx-Dantxarinea to the Col d'Aubisque in France and evenually helped set up a win for his LottoNL-Jumbo teammate Robert Gesink.

The 26-year-old featured in an early breakaway of 35 riders before they tackled the first of four steep climbs.

The leading group gradually fragmented, with Bennett among the last to drop off the pace, finishing 31sec behind Dutchman Gesink.

Bennett climbs from 18th to 12th on general classification with seven stages remaining in the Grand Tour race.

It continues a breakthrough year for Bennett, who completed his maiden Tour de France in July and was New Zealand's sole representative in the road race at the Rio Olympics.

He is 6min 37sec behind Colombian leader Nairo Quintana, who continues to keep second-placed Briton Chris Froome at bay by less than a minute.

Froome is bidding to become the first rider in 38 years to win the Tour de France and the Tour of Spain in the same season.
