Bennett hangs on to top-10 spot

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 22/05/2016

Kiwi cyclist George Bennett has clung on to his top-10 placing in the Tour of California, sitting ninth with just one stage remaining

Riding for Dutch team Lotto NL-Jumbo, Bennett finished the 175km seventh stage in 4hr 19min 52sec, in 29th place but on the same time as stage winner Alexander Kristoff (Katusha).

Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-Quick Step) also finished on the same time to maintain his grasp on the yellow jersey, 16sec clear of second-placed Australian Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing).

Bennett sits 1min 45sec down on Alaphilippe in ninth place going into the final flat 136km closing stage which completes the eight-day tour in Sacramento.

The 26-year-old New Zealander sat third for much of the tour, but dropped six places after the 20km time trial around the streets of Folsom on Saturday (NZT).
