Leading Kiwi road professional George Bennett is still second overall in the Tour of California after performing strongly in stage three.

A day after being pipped into second place on stage two, Bennett responded well in the long 192.5km leg from Pismo Beach to Morro Bay.

World champion Peter Sagan of Slovakia won a sprint finish, with Bennett at the head of a group which finished three seconds behind a leading bunch of 15.

Tour leader Rafal Majka of Poland was also in that group, keeping him 2sec ahead of the Kiwi on general classification.

Riding for LottoNL-Jumbo, Bennett suffered heartbreak on day two when Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe) held him off in a two-man duel for the finish line.

Bennett closed within a wheel of victory following a hilly ride, missing out on what would have been the most illustrious stage win of his career.

The fourth of seven stages on Thursday (NZT) is 160km from Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita, featuring two steep climbs.
