NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 20/05/2016

Kiwi cyclist George Bennett has maintained third place overall on the Tour of California, finishing the 213km fifth stage in 18th place at South Lake Tahoe on Friday.

Bennett finished 43 seconds down on stage winner Tom Skujins (Cannondale) of Latvia, who outsprinted Canadian Adam de Vos (Rally Cycling) for a 5h 54min 45sec win.

The New Zealander was in an 18-strong group which also included yellow jersey wearer Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-Quick Step) of France.

Alaphilippe holds a 22sec lead over American Peter Stetina (Trek Stegafredo), with Bennett a further 15sec off the pace in third, a scant three seconds ahead of fourth-placed American Brent Bookwalter (BMC Racing).

The only other New Zealander in the field, Patrick Bevin (Cannondale), finished nearly two minutes down on the leaders in 53rd place and sits 83rd overall.

The 140-strong field tackles a 20.3km time trial around the streets of Folsom before the eight-day tour finishes with two final stages at the weekend.
