An individual time trial looks set to determine the fate of leading Kiwi professional George Bennett in the Tour of California.

Bennett remains second on general classification after another prominent showing in the fifth of seven stages on Friday (NZT), crossing the line third.

The 125km stage was decided in a four-man showdown over the closing kilometres - a steep climb to the summit of Mt Baldy.

It was won by American Andrew Talansky from Poland's Rafal Majka, with Team LottoNL-Jumbo rider Bennett third, two seconds behind the leading pair.

Bennett is now 6sec behind Majka for overall honours in the World Tour event, with another 19sec back to third-placed American Ian Boswell.

No Kiwi has ever won a World Tour event.

Bennett will need to produce his best in what shapes as a decisive sixth stage on Saturday (NZT), a 24km individual time trial at Big Bear Lake which is expected to be fast because of its flat nature.
