Berisha is Victory's A-League finals charm

NZN 5/05/2017 Ben McKay

Archie Thompson has backed Besart Berisha to be the difference in Sunday's grand final, cementing his place as an A-League immortal.

The Melbourne Victory greats sit first and second on the all-time scoring charts for the competition and both know a thing or two about scoring in important games.

Berisha comes in to the decider with Sydney FC on a six-final scoring streak - seven if you include the 2015 FFA Cup final.

Thompson preferred to do his scoring in big hits.

His five-goal haul in the 2007 grand final is unlikely to be bettered, while his tally of 13 goals against American Samoa in 2001 remains a world record.

The pair were teammates for two seasons at Victory after the A-League powerhouse lured Berisha from Brisbane Roar.

Speaking at the Victory in Business function - in front of a packed audience of 1320 people - on Friday, Thompson backed Berisha to re-write the record books against the Sky Blues.

"He's scored in every final he's played in (for Victory)," Thompson said.

"He loves the big matches, he's like Tim Cahill.

"The scripts are written for certain players and Bes always seems to be the main actor.

"Last week against Brisbane we didn't see too much of Bes but of course who pops up and scores the winner to put Melbourne Victory in a grand final?"

Thompson is adamant that Berisha's famed focus will help Victory cause an almighty upset against the record-breaking Sky Blues at Allianz Stadium.

"I had the pleasure of playing with him for two years. His intensity - what you see on the pitch, he takes that to training," Thompson said.

"I'm a big believer in how you train is how you play. That's why he's had so much success.

"That's why I believe he can change the grand final. Just like that."
