Better protection for child witnesses

Child witnesses will be better protected in court under a bill that has have been passed by parliament.

Justice Minister Amy Adams says it will avoid unnecessary trauma.

The Evidence Amendment Bill was passed on Tuesday night and under its terms child witnesses will give evidence through videos of police interviews, closed circuit TV or from behind a screen.

All child witnesses will be automatically entitled to have a support person with them.

Last year around 450 child witnesses gave evidence in criminal cases.
