Kiwi road professional Patrick Bevin's storming form has earned him a start in the Tour de France.

Bevin was the first New Zealander confirmed to contest this year's race starting in Dusseldorf on Saturday, following some notable tour results for his Cannondale-Drapac team.

The 26-year-old finished sixth overall on the Tour of Norway in May, which featured three top-10 stage finishes.

He was even more prominent in this month's Tour de Suisse, placing second, sixth and fourth in sprint stages and then 10th in the ninth and final stage's individual time trial.

"I want a performance I can be proud of, not just three weeks of holding on for dear life," Bevin said in a team statement.

Bevin's only previous grand tour appearance came in last year's Vuelta a Espana, when he was forced out with injury.

Many teams are still to name their Tour de France lineups.

George Bennett, a breakthrough overall winner of the Tour of California five weeks ago, is expected to be in LottoNL-Jumbo's nine-man lineup.
