Kiwi cyclist Patrick Bevin has fallen just short of a stage win in the Tour de Suisse, beaten in the final sprint by Belgian Philippe Gilbert.

Tour of Flanders winner Gilbert (Quick-Step) edged Bevin for line honours in the 172.2km second stage, which took in a four-lap loop around Cham in Switzerland.

Gilbert clocked four hours, 22 minutes and 36 seconds for the win, with 26-year-old Bevin (Cannondale) on the same time.

Swiss rider Stefan Kueng (BMC Racing) holds the early overall lead, with Bevin 13sec behind in ninth place.

A handful of New Zealanders are contesting the nine-stage Tour de Suisse, Sam Bewley (Orica), Jack Bauer (Quick-Step Floors) and Aaron Gate (Aqua Blue) all looking to push their claims for a spot in teams for the upcoming Tour de France.
