Bewley braced for Giro d'Italia grind

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 5/05/2016

New Zealand professional Sam Bewley won't get the chance to repeat his 2015 heroics when the Giro d'Italia cycle tour begins in the Netherlands.

The 21-stage grand tour starts with a time trial in Apeldoorn on Friday before moving to Italy, where Bewley is the only Kiwi in the peloton.

Last year his Orica-GreenEDGE team won the opening team time trial stage, something he later described as the highlight of an impressive year with the Australian outfit.

However, organisers have made this year's first stage an individual ride.

Two-time Olympic track medallist Bewley, 28, will have a grafting role over the next three weeks, to help the cause of Colombian Esteban Chaves, who is regarded as a genuine contender for general classification honours.

Bewley made his Giro debut last year, when Kiwis Greg Henderson and George Bennett were also in the field.
