A man has been thwarted in his attempt to abduct a two-year-old girl outside a preschool in Hamilton.

As her father was getting his other child out of the car, a male walking past has called the girl over, grabbed her by the arm, and attempted to walk off with her, police say.

The incident happened at a preschool on Peachgrove Road just before 6pm on Friday.

The father has yelled out to the man, who has then headed off towards Te Aroha Street.

The man is described as Caucasian, aged about 50, of medium build and around 177cm tall.

He was wearing a blue suit jacket, and possibly beige-coloured pants.

He is described as tidily dressed but had possibly been sleeping rough.

Police are calling for witnesses.
