Big Wednesday death boosts Lotto

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 16/10/2016

Saying bye, bye to Big Wednesday has paid off big time for Lotto.

The lottery game has enjoyed more than a 15 per cent boost in weekly sales after its operator called time on the Big Wednesday variant in October last year.

Lotto New Zealand's annual report reveals sales for the year to the end of June were up 9 per cent to just over $974 million - the group's second-best result.

"More people are playing our games more often," said chief executive Wayne Pickup.

Despite the sales boost from introducing Lotto twice a week, the game still missed its target for the year by $18m and sales across all its games were $25m shy of the year's goal as Instant Kiwi and others also fell short.

It made a net profit of $204m which is distributed to community initiatives via the NZ Lottery Grants Board.
