Bikenhead United win Chatham Cup

Birkenhead United have won the Chatham Cup for the first time in the club's history.

It was a high-scoring game with the 3-2 triumph over Waitakere City coming in extra-time at QBE Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The match started off with cautions to Waitakere's Jordan Hearn and Birkenhead pair Godwin Darkwa and Jack Salter early on but the match settled and there were no real attacks on goal for the first 20 minutes.

That changed on 23 minutes when ex-All White Jarrod Smith received a Ryan Cain pass and teed himself up to strike a low volley home from just inside the penalty area.

Waitakere had a chance five minutes later but Anthony Hagan curled a free kick just wide of the post.

Smith scored for Birkenhead again in the 38th minute and Birkenhead remained 2-0 up at half-time.

The scoreline did not change until Waitakere dramatically scored twice in the dying stages of the second half to send the match into extra-time.

Birkenhead finally scored the match winner when former All White Ross Nicholson in the Waitakere goal couldn't hang on to a cross under pressure and substitute Ethan Galbraith was on hand to turn it into the net.
