Bill gives nurses more responsibility

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 1/11/2016

Parliament has passed law changes that allow nurses and pharmacists to carry out some of the functions currently restricted to doctors.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says that means more timely care closer to home, particularly in rural areas.

Nurse practitioners and pharmacists will be able to prescribe drugs to treat addiction.

Nurses and physiotherapists will be able to sign sick leave certificates.

Nurse practitioners providing care for a patient who dies will be able to certify the cause of death.

"This change is especially important in rural areas and aged care services and will help prevent unnecessary delays for families," Dr Coleman said.
