Bin NRL players for touching refs: Fittler

NZN 24/04/2016 James MacSmith

Brad Fittler has called for players to be sinbinned for touching referees with Adam Reynolds emerging as the latest player in the cross hairs of the NRL's crackdown on making illegal contact with match officials.

Footage has emerged of South Sydney halfback Reynolds touching referee Jared Maxwell in the loss to Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium on Friday.

Penrith prop Sam McKendry was found guilty of a contrary conduct charge by the NRL judiciary on Wednesday night and was banned for one match.

"What this (crackdown) has shown is it happens a lot more than people think," champion former player and now commentator Fittler told Channel Nine.

"What the ref should be doing is on the spot saying `you touch me I'll do something about it' and put him in the sin bin.

"What they should be saying is `righto, this is now a sinbinning offence' and if it is a serious one have a further look at it.

"Let's act on it as it happens, that is the best way to do it."

However, Fittler said Reynolds shouldn't be in danger of suspension.

"Adam Reynolds has done nothing wrong there," he said.
