The Black Ferns Sevens aren't getting too reflective despite sitting within a whisker of clinching a fourth seventh world series crown.

New Zealand need only advance through pool play at the sixth and final round in Clermont Ferrand, France this weekend to add to their success in the first three series from 2013-15.

Australia stopped their run last year, when they also denied the Black Ferns Sevens a gold medal at the Rio Olympics.

However, the New Zealanders have returned to their dominant ways, winning four of five tournaments, including the last three.

They have accrued 96 points, 14 clear of Canada and Australia.

Interim captain Tyler Nathan-Wong says nothing is being taken for granted by the Black Ferns, despite lining up in a relatively lightweight pool, comprising Japan, the United States and Ireland. All sit outside the top five in the standings.

Determination is palpable, she said.

"It would be a massive achievement for us, coming off last year where we finished behind Australia and then came second to them in that Olympic final," she said.

"We're looking forward to playing well and hopefully lifting that title."

Playmaker Nathan-Wong is standing in as skipper in place of Sarah Goss, who is one of several Black Ferns 15-a-side players unavailable for the tournament.
