New Zealand have responded to a heavy first-up loss by beating Argentina 1-0 in the second women's Test in Buenos Aires.

Olivia Merry scored the lone goal to square the six-Test series after losing the opener 3-0 a day earlier.

The visitors were more structured around the field and more robust defensively, not giving Las Leonas the same space to work in.

The clean sheet was a fitting result for defender Ella Gunson in her 150th match.

Captain for the match Merry kept her nerve when her team won a penalty stroke midway through the third quarter.

Assistant coach Sean Dancer said it was pleasing to see how New Zealand responded to the opening loss.

"I was impressed with our team's fight and spirit under pressure, especially in the final quarter where we stood up and Grace O'Hanlon made some good saves in goal."

Dancer says he expects an aggressive Argentina to come out in the third game on Friday (NZT).
