The Black Sticks have defeated Pakistan 3-2 in Wellington in the opening Test of a five-match hockey series.

A Cory Bennett penalty corner goal sent the Kiwis two ahead with 10 minutes to go, before a Pakistan goal set up a grandstand finish.

New Zealand held on to secure victory in what was coach Darren Smith's first outing at the Black Sticks' helm.

Smith felt his side had controlled possession and delivered from the set piece.

"I was happy with the work rate and the desire from all the players was high," Smith said.

"We stuck to our task and defended well under pressure at the end."

The two sides will face off on Saturday in the second Test.
