The Black Sticks have crashed to a 3-0 loss to India in a setback to their chances at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup men's tournament in Malaysia.

After opening their campaign with a 1-1 draw against defending champions Australia, the eighth-ranked New Zealanders struggled to match world No.6 India in most facets.

After a relatively even start to the game, Mandeep Singh opened the scoring midway through the second quarter through a deflection past goalkeeper Devon Manchester.

India forced a wealth of penalty corners throughout the match and two of them were converted by drag-flick specialist Harmanpreet Singh either side of halftime.

The Black Sticks' next match at the six-nation tournament is against Japan on Tuesday.

World No.16 Japan have made the same start to the tournament as New Zealand, with an opening 1-1 draw against Malaysia followed by a 5-3 loss to Great Britain.
