New Zealand has won the second Test in their five-match women's hockey series against Malaysia in Stratford.

The 2-0 victory against an improved Malaysian team backs up the Black Sticks' opening 3-0 win at the same venue on Monday.

It took just three minutes for the Kiwis to open the scoring, with Michaela Curtis putting the finishing touch on a great assist from Natasha FitzSimons.

Catherine Tinning doubled the lead in the 43rd minute, making a well-timed tackle in the circle before slipping the ball past the keeper's pads.

Alia Jaques, Megan Hull, Deanna Ritchie and Jess Anderson made their New Zealand debuts against the world No.21 Malaysians.

New Zealand assistant coach Sean Dancer said although the Black Sticks had dominated created the first half, they had largely been unable to convert their scoring chances.

"Malaysia played well, particularly in the second half but we fought hard and pressed well, which is what led to the second goal."

The third Test is on Thursday.
