Black Sticks end Spanish series with draw

New Zealand have failed to lodge a win against Spain in their four-match women's hockey series against Spain, drawing the final Test in Barcelona 3-3.

The Black Sticks at least found their attacking edge, having scored just three times across the first three games.

Kelsey Smith opened the scoring for the visitors in the 10th minute of a roller-coaster game before Spain claimed the lead with goals either side of halftime.

New Zealand enjoyed a purple patch in the third quarter, scoring through Jordan Grant and Pippa Hayward to lead going into the final stanza.

However, Spain snatched an equaliser eight minutes from the end to seal a 2-0 series win.

Black Sticks assistant coach Sean Dancer says while the result is another disappointment, it was an improved way to finish the series.

"It was good to see see the girls flowing well with the ball early in the game," he said.

"We created enough to win the game but were unable to make more of our opportunities."

Spain will again be the opposition when the Black Sticks open their account at the World League Semi Final tournament in Brussels next week.
