NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 28/04/2016

The New Zealand men's hockey team will need to hit the Rio turf running after being pitted against top-ranked Australia in their opening game at the Olympics.

The Black Sticks, ranked No.8 in the world, play big guns the Kookaburras on August 6.

"There are no easy games at the Olympics and you can certainly see that in the draw for Rio," said Hockey NZ high performance manager Terry Evans.

They also face the higher-ranked Great Britain and Belgium in their group.

The fourth-ranked women's team have an easier opener against world No.9 Korea who they beat 6-0 at the recent Hawke's Bay Cup.

The top four teams from each pool qualify for the quarter-finals.
