Black Sticks fall to Dutch

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/06/2016

The New Zealand men's hockey team has been defeated 1-0 by world No.2 the Netherlands in the first of a three-match series in Groningen.

Seve van Ass scored the sole goal for the home side, netting from a penalty corner.

The Black Sticks created numerous chances throughout the match but were unable to capitalise, with Blair Hilton hitting the crossbar in the opening minute.

New Zealand coach Colin Batch said his side had plenty to work on before the next game on Friday (NZT).

"We played a good game defensively, there weren't a lot of opportunities for either team," Batch said.

"We created more goal scoring chances but need to improve at converting them into goals."

Following the series the Black Sticks will head to Spain for a Six Nations tournament in Valencia.
