Black Sticks hit for six by Germany

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 28/06/2016

New Zealand have been reminded of the size of their Olympic challenge after crashing to a 6-1 loss to Germany at the Six Nations tournament in Valencia.

The world No.3 Germans were a class above the eighth-ranked Black Sticks, who were exposed at the back and struggled for decent scoring chances.

Germany dominated possession to lead 4-0 at halftime and scored twice more in the final quarter.

New Zealand scored from a penalty corner in the final minute through defender Kane Russell.

It was their first goal of the tournament following a 2-0 loss to hosts Spain a day earlier.

New Zealand have a rest day before meeting India on Thursday, followed by games against Ireland and Argentina.

It is their last hit-out ahead of the Rio Olympics in August.
