Black Sticks men unbeaten in Malaysia

NZN 10/04/2016

Defending champions New Zealand remain unbeaten at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup men's hockey tournament in Malaysia after beating Japan 4-1.

The Black Sticks men scored goals through Nick Wilson, Simon Child, Nic Woods and Hugo Inglis.

Man of the match Wilson got things started in the fourth minute and Child doubled the lead before Kazuma Murata halved the deficit.

Played in stifling 37C heat, there were extended breaks at the end of each quarter and just before halftime Woods restored the two-goal advantage from a penalty corner.

Wilson laid on a goal for Inglis to complete the scoring late on and coach Colin Batch said they coped with the conditions as best they could.

"I thought we dealt with the heat pretty well, we started very well and scored a couple of early goals which gave us a good edge," he said.

The Black Sticks now have a rest day before facing unbeaten Australia on Tuesday.
