Erin Goad scored a late equaliser for New Zealand to snatch a 1-1 result against Australia on day two of the women's Festival of Hockey tournament in Hastings.

The Hockeyroos appeared on track for their first win courtesy of a first-quarter goal to Laura Barden.

However, they couldn't prevent Goad scoring with less than two minutes remaining.

New Zealand pick up their first points at the four-nation tournament after opening with a 2-1 loss to Japan on Friday.

Australia have recorded 1-1 draws in each of their games, having fought back against the United States in the opener.

Japan continued their perfect start with a 2-1 defeat of the US on Saturday.

The lowest-ranked team at the tournament, they once again struck early through Motomi Kawamura.

Amanda Dinunzio responded for the Americans from a penalty corner early in the second quarter but Japan responded before the main break through Mami Karino, who pounced on a loose ball.

The US dominated much of the second spell but struggled to create clear chances.

The tournament resumes on Monday when New Zealand face the US and Australia try to knock Japan off their perch.
