Black Sticks win final Malaysia Test

New Zealand have added some icing to their women's hockey series against Malaysia with a 2-1 victory in the fifth and final Test.

The new-look Black Sticks notched a 4-1 series win over the world No.21 ranked visitors in Stratford but were made to work hard at times.

That was the case on Sunday as the hosts failed to capitalise on their opportunities, keeping Malaysia in the contest until the end.

A first-half double to Samantha Harrison proved the difference, with Malaysia scoring 10 minutes from fulltime to set up a tense finish.

Assistant coach Sean Dancer came away with mixed feelings.

"We are happy to finish with a win, but needed to score a few more goals from the amount of opportunities we created," he said.

"Malaysia defended well in the second half and we needed to execute better in a congested attacking third."

A swag of untested New Zealand players were selected for the series, beginning the process of building towards the 2020 Olympics in Japan.

Dancer says the benefits will be reaped later.

"Overall this series has been a great learning experience and development opportunity for our group."
