Black Sticks women slump to third defeat

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 23/06/2016

Argentina captain Carla Rebecchi scored twice to help her side hand the New Zealand women's hockey side their third defeat at the Champions Trophy in London.

Rebecchi's goals either side of halftime gave Argentina a 3-0 lead and despite a second-half fightback the Black Sticks went down 4-2.

Sophie Cocks and Olivia Merry struck after the break but the New Zealanders were left with too much to do after a sluggish start.

"We were a bit late out there and it was tough. We weren't clinical enough," said Kayla Whitelock.

Argentina's Florencia Habif opened the scoring from a penalty corner before Rebecchi's brace took her tournament goal tally to seven and then Maria Granatto added a fourth goal.

The Black Sticks play United States on Sunday (NZT).
