Slater was charged with attempting to pay hacker Ben Rachinger thousands of dollars to access The Standard blog. However, The Standard's computer files were never accessed.

He was granted a diversion - meaning he won't be convicted for the offence - and has arranged to do 40 hours of work for a children's charity in recompense according to media reports.

Rachinger's case will go to trial after he pleaded not guilty.
