Blues crush Northland in Whangarei

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 24/06/2016

The Blues have shaken off any mid-season Super Rugby rust with a 73-8 romp against a Northland Barbarians team in Whangarei.

Looking to stay match-fit during the three-week international break, the Blues scored 11 tries, including doubles to wingers Melani Nanai and Matt Vaega and flanker Kara Pryor.

Five tries came in the last 20 minutes, leaving Blues coach Tana Umaga happy with the outcome and the lack of apparent injuries.

"There's no substitute for game time and it was ideal for us."

The 11th-placed Blues face the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday next week when Super Rugby resumes.

All five Kiwi teams had hit-outs during the June break.

The Highlanders beat the competition-leading Crusaders 40-12 in Oamaru, the Hurricanes beat the Rebels 31-10 in Melbourne while the Chiefs crushed Wales 40-7 in Hamilton.
