Flanker Blake Gibson is set to make his return from injury for the Blues when the Super Rugby side take on the Northland Barbarians in Whangarei.

The 21-year-old Gibson, who showed impressive form before fracturing a thumb in training more than two months ago, has been named in the reserves.

Coach Tana Umaga has selected a 27-strong squad for the match on Friday night.

He has rested first five-eighth Ihaia West, and loose forwards Steven Luatua and Tanerau Latimer to give them extra time to get over niggling injuries.

The hit-out is part of the Blues' preparations for the resumption of Super Rugby in the first weekend of July after the June international window.

For the Northland Barbarians, the fixture is a chance for players to press their claims for places in the Northland squad for the upcoming national provincial championship.
