A rescue helicopter in the Bay of Plenty has saved those on board an overturned boat.

A police spokeswoman says they received a report just before 1pm on Monday that a boat had capsized in the water in Welcome Bay in Tauranga, between Rotary Park and James Cook Drive.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to help, as people were seen in the water and the boat was overturned.

A police spokeswoman said all those on board were wearing life jackets, and were safe.

Members of the Coastguard were checking everyone was accounted for.
